New at Medcan: Psychology sessions by video visit

Virtual sessions remove obstacles to therapy

Medcan recently launched video counselling for clients. Video visits are real-time sessions conducted with a clinical psychologist on your smartphone, tablet or computer, while you are in the comfort of your home, office or while travelling.

Gina Di Giulio, Clinical Psychologist and Director of Psychology, explains three simple reasons why therapy sessions via video are an attractive option for many of her clients.

Virtual options remove barriers to attending your session

“This avenue can overcome barriers to therapy for people who live in remote areas, or people who have long commutes or who are hesitant about seeing a therapist, especially for the first visit,” says Dr. Di Giulio. “Video visits are also a smart option for people with hearing and visual impairments since aids on their devices can make communication very easy. Any of these obstacles may have prevented therapy from being initiated, and that’s a really big step forward.”

Connect with ease

“Simply put, it’s more convenient. Frequent travel is no longer a reason to delay treatments, and it’s an easy way for busy people to get support when they are swamped at work or at home,” says Dr. Di Giulio. “My clients tell me factors that would have once delayed or cancelled an appointment no longer get in the way. Therapy by video visit allows people to identify and understand signs of distress, and move forward with support and solutions.”

Conducted in your own private space

Video visits allow a controlled environment from start to finish ensuring total discretion. Dr. Di Giulio adds that when a session is conducted by video from a private space, it’s far easier to gain that private time immediately after a session to reflect on what was discussed, integrate learnings or start any exercises.

The video visit is conducted using an app downloaded to your mobile device or simply click on the link provided when you make your appointment. The Medcan psychologist may also share secure, encrypted private notes and templates for follow-up work over the app.
